Baucus-Tester
U.S. Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester are among several senators, questioning the Army's maternity leave policy for active-duty mothers.

They says the Army remains the only branch of the Armed Services to provide only the Defense Department minimum of a 4-month deferment for new military mothers.

Baucus and Tester joined Senators Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Olympia Snowe of Maine in questioning why the Army is only providing the bare minimum of leave to new mothers.

G.A. Custer
G.A. Custer
On June 25, 1876, George Armstrong Custer and the 265 men under his command lost their lives in the Battle of Little Big Horn, often referred to as Custer's Last Stand. Just 13 years later in 1889, Missoula City Father C.P. Higgins started construction of the Western Montana Bank in the Higgins Block at the corner of what is now Higgins Avenue and Front Street.

Ann Landers
Ann Landers
Dear Ann Landers: Two years ago, I met a wonderful man, and we have been dating ever since. When "Bob" bought a home last May, he asked me to move in with him. I knew his mother would be moving in, too, but I thought it would be temporary.

Well, it's been eight months, and she is still here. I cook, clean and do laundry, but she does everything over again, saying I didn't do a good job. She has peculiar eating habits, which makes it difficult for me to prepare a tasty meal that everyone can enjoy. When I try to cook something she can eat, she claims my cooking "doesn't taste right" and adds other ingredients or dilutes it with water. She also tells me I shouldn't use a mop on the floor because "it's not clean unless you get down on your hands and knees and scrub."

I've told Bob several times that I am ready to pack up and leave, but he cries and begs me to stay. I honestly don't want to go, Ann. I really love the guy. Can you help me?

Just thoughts
Just thoughts
So today, while considering the mega-overhaul needed to move GoMissoula.com to a local news centric site, although news is just a small part of it, and while considering the projects GoMissoula.com has scheduled for next year, and while researching -- as a part of that -- "the homeless," I got a call from Clare Kelly. She was calling on behalf of ForwardMontana.org's upcoming rally to bring attention to hate crimes in our community. This Thursday's focus will be on the recent hate crime against a homeless man on the California Street Bridge last Wednesday.

ImageIn the presidential election of 2004, exit surveys of voters suggested a victory for Democratic nominee John Kerry. The actual vote, however, went in favor of President Bush.

That was a case of bad polling.

In Tuesday's New Hampshire Democratic primary, conventional wisdom had it that Sen. Barack Obama would win, based on his lead in pre-election polls, but it was Sen. Hillary Clinton who prevailed. That was a case of bad journalism, punditry and prediction-mongering by everyone else who chimed in.
